Resources

Resources that are not my own. Discover tools, videos, projects, software, music, and more that is invaluable for educators, musicians, and creators alike.

  • When revolutionizing the public school music classroom, you need a website like Hip-Hop Music Ed. This site has aggregated wonderful lessons, videos, resources, articles, and more. We as music educators need to advocate for more diverse music in the classroom. We also need to bring hip-hop, rap, and DJing into the classroom.

  • White Vinyl Design is a fantastic resource for ambient soundscapes, visual music, and beautiful designed interactive. These can be great tools for developing student's focus, or giving them a place to unwind, explore and relax.

  • You should check out White Vinyl Design's BlokDust. It is amazing. This is a great browser based way to get students into graphic audio programming languages while playing like a video game. This is a good sandbox and stepping stone towards more complex tools like PureData and Max/MSP.

  • Pure Data is an oldie but a goodie. Its best on Linux these days because you can run the fantastic PD2Lork. Even with Windows or OSX you can get lots of power out of PD-Extended and PD-Vanilla. Its an amazing tool with a steep learning curve, but it also has so much power and flexibility. Thanks Ico Bukvic!

  • Purr Data is the new fork of PureData for use on Windows, Apple, and your toaster. While it does not have the education focused branch like PD2Lork, it is still incredibly useful. You can make far better looking patches quickly, and it has some much needed improvements to the way you write PD code. Thanks Jonathan Wilkes!

  • Ryan Ross Smith has a variety of animated scores for small ensemble performance. Some are very difficult and high level music skills. A few are very manageable by younger and less experienced improvisers (consider No. 8 or No. 32).

  • ACT and the MayDay Group host great articles on music and music education. Its literary body contains  a deep focus on social values, equity, and the deeper meaning of music.

  • SAMR is a reflection and assessment tool to judge the effectiveness and potential of technologies in education. Read more here!

  • I'm running a Twitter account for the Create Perform Record Ensemble at Floyd Dryden in Juneau, AK. Check it out!
